Health is not the foundation of everything. That may sound strange coming from someone that does wellness coaching. My point is simply that it is possible to live a personally fulfilling life and not be healthy. Elite level athletes make choices to prioritize performance over health. Some business people choose to prioritize financial wealth over physical health. There are people that live with terminal diseases and continue to pursue their life’s passion. Health is not a prerequisite for “success” in life.
The Unavoidable End
The reality is that death and illness are part of the human condition. At some point, everyone experiences their final breath of air. It is a not negotiable fact that a person’s experience of living in a physical body will come to an end one day. While it is not a choice that a person can make whether or not they will die, they can make choices about how they will live.
Choice and Consequences
As an adult, a person has the ability to make their own decisions. There are consequences that arise from every choice a person makes as well as the choices not made. When a person makes a conscious decision and is fully aware of the consequences associated with that choice, then that is their personal freedom. Other people are unaware of the consequences related to the choices they are making each day. These are the same people that would potentially benefit from wellness coaching.
The Exception to the Rule
Many live their life in a state denial or avoidance. In a general way, people know that eating junk food and not getting enough sleep and living under constant stress can negatively affect a person’s health. Unfortunately, the same people usually think that they will be the exception to the rule. They believe that somehow they will magically avoid the consequences of their choices. There focus is on the immediate pleasures of the moment without concern for the future repercussions. This is a recipe for illness and premature death.
Who Will Benefit from Wellness Coaching?
Wellness coaching offers a different path. It is not meant for those people that have a single-minded focus and are willing to sacrifice everything to obtain their goal. Wellness coaching also is not focused on the people that want to continue to eat junk food, avoid physical activity, and abdicate their personal responsibility to maintain their health to doctors. It is for people that are ready to experience something different besides early onset chronic disease. Wellness coaching focuses on helping people that want to change their life but may not know how.
More Years to Your Life and More Life to Your Years
Regardless of a person’s current level of health, the wellness coaching process can help a person experience more balance or wholeness in their life. By starting from the point, each individual is unique and lives in a complex system of dynamic interacting parts. A wellness coach can help a person experience more balance and satisfaction in their life. While it is outside of the control of a wellness coach to prevent death, it is likely that a person will experience more years in their life, and more importantly, experience more life in their years with the wellness coaching process.
Question for Reflection
To facilitate your thinking, here are some questions for personal reflection.
- What choices are you currently making that are affecting your health either positively or negatively?
- Are you will willing to accept the consequences of your current choices?
- Do you want to continue to travel down your current path of health for the next 5, 10, or 20 years?
- What will be the result of your choices if you choose not to change your life?
- How would your life be different if you were to experience more balance in the various aspects of your life?
- What is your health worth to you?
