The Wellness Coaching Process (Part 3)




Hey guys. Welcome to the Saluber Coaching Show. Helping you make wellness a priority. My name is Dr. Matthew Blaylock, and in today's episode, we're going to continue the series on the wellness coaching process. If you haven't tuned in to the previous two episodes, I encourage you to take a look at those videos. I cover about how you need to go about setting a goal for yourself. What you need to do in order to begin thinking through the process of how you can achieve your wellness goals in your life.


Power to Reach Your Goal


Now, today we're going to jump right in, and we're going to continue the process of me facilitating you through this process. The first question today is, do you have the power to reach the goals that you set for yourself? Is this goal within your control? What I mean by that is most people, at least the ones that I know, don't have the ability to grow taller at will. People that feel that they are too short, if they set a goal to grow taller, they're just going to be frustrated. That is not within their power. It is not within their control. Same way when somebody tries to set a goal for their spouse to change a certain behavior or their children to act a different way. That's only going to lead to frustration because that's not within your personal control. Now, something that's different is somebody that wants to lose weight. Losing weight is a choice. It's a lifestyle process, and a person can do things - change the way they eat, change their sleeping patterns, change their exercise patterns - and they can lose weight. That's within their control. So, as we begin is this goal that you're setting for yourself something that's within your power to control?


Ability to Reach Your Goal


Now, closely related to that is the next question. Do you have the ability to reach this goal? Do you have the set of capabilities necessary to continue to move forward to reach this goal? Do you have the persistence and the dedication and the drive that's going to be necessary to sustain you through this process? If you don't have the ability or the capabilities right now, that's okay because those are things that you can learn and develop over time. But, you need to be aware of the capabilities that are necessary in order to achieve this goal. That may be a prerequisite. Maybe something you need to focus on developing within yourself before you begin focusing on reaching this goal in your life.


What’s Your Plan


Now, beyond whether or not you have the power or whether or not you have the capabilities, you need a plan. Do you have a clear strategy for what it's going to take for you to reach your goal? How many steps or stages are going to be necessary for you to move from where you are to where you want to be? I'm not saying you have to have a 100% detailed plan all written out. But, you need to have some kind of idea of these are the steps that you're going to need to go through.


Monitor Your Progress


Once that plan is kind of clear in your mind, then you need some form of feedback. Once you start going through those steps, what are you going to use to monitor your progress? That's the feedback that you're going to be getting. When you do certain actions, you're going to get feedback. Now, is that helping you move in the right direction? Think about mile markers on the road. Are you going on the right road and moving in the right direction or are your actions taking you on the wrong route? You need some tools to measure whether or not you're moving forward in the right direction.


What’s Holding You Back?


Then, once you measure whether you're moving in the right direction or not, you need to ask yourself is there anything holding you back at this point? Is there anything preventing you or anything stopping you from beginning the process to achieve your goal? Maybe you have something with inside yourself that is holding your back. Maybe it's some beliefs, or maybe it's doubts. Maybe the thing holding you back is you don't yet have the capability or the ability. Maybe you think there are other people that are holding you back. Maybe you need to do something about your relationships. Whatever it may be you need to be aware of anything that may be holding you back in this process.




Have you thought through these things? If you haven't, I encourage you to take the time to do that right now. Ask yourself these questions and if you're the kind of person that likes to write it down take some time and write it down. If you just need to think through it yourself, take some time and work through these questions this week. We have one more session left.
