The Wellness Coaching Process (Part 4)

Introduction

 

Hey guys. Welcome to the Saluber Coaching Show. Helping you make wellness a priority. My name is Dr. Matthew Blaylock and in today's episode, we're going to continue to talk about the wellness coaching process. If you haven't taken the opportunity, I've made three videos in this series already. I encourage you to get the most impact from this episode go back and watch those three videos before you continue watching this video.

 

Previous Attempts

 

Today, the first question in the wellness coaching process is, have you ever tried to achieve this goal in your life before? If you have ever tried to reach this goal in your life before, what were the results like? Is there something you can learn from your previous experience that will help you achieve your goal this time? In way of an example, the average person goes on for 4-5 diets a year. Now, think of someone who's been trying to lose weight for 10 years. That means they have gone on 40 or 50 diets but they're still trying to reach this goal of weight loss. Do you think there might be some useful information if they sat down and took some time to review what they've done in the past - both their actions and the results have gotten - and then change their behavior in a certain way in order to do something different?

 

Definition of Insanity

 

Einstein one said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.” In order to help you not make the same mistake, take a few minutes to think through what you've already done and don't do the same thing again that didn't help you achieve your goal previously. If you've never tried this goal before or if you've never tried to achieve something like this in your life before, that's fine. Whatever you do, you're going to get feedback from it. You can take that feedback and see if it's moving you forward. You've already, in the previous episode, I talked about how are you going to monitor your progress. If that feedback is in line with the direction that you want to move - great keep going. If not, let's take that feedback and change your behavior.

 

Necessary Resources

 

As you're going through this process now, the next question is, do you have the resources that you need in order to achieve this goal? Do you need something inside of yourself - an internal resource maybe? Do you need more information or do you need to develop some skills like I talked about in the previous episode? Do you have the capabilities to reach the goal that you've set for yourself? Do you need some form of external resources? Is there something that you need from someone else? Is there some thing or some products that you need in order to achieve the goal that you've set for yourself? You need to have some idea of the resources necessary. You don't start building a house if you don't have all the resources necessary to build it. Same way, as you're starting this goal, you need to be clear about what you need.

 

Consequences

 

The next question is, are you aware of the consequences that achieving this goal will have in your life? A lot of people begin to do something - begin to pursue an outcome or pursue a goal in their lives - and they haven't truly thought through the consequences of what will change in their life or how this will impact their life or how this will impact the lives of people around them. Think about somebody that wants to quit smoking. All of their friends are smokers. How is that going to affect their relationship with their circle of friends if they stop smoking? What about the person who wants to lose weight, but all of their friends like to go out eat dessert at nice restaurants? How is that going to have an impact on that person's relationship with these friends? I'm not saying that you need to change your goal in order to fit in with everyone else. I'm just saying have you thought through the impact or the consequences of this goal in your life.

 

Ready to Change?

 

The final and really and truly the most important question. After you've thought through all of the questions I've asked you in the previous three episodes, the one question that's going to matter most in your life is, are you truly ready to make this decision today? Are you finally ready to change? Because, if you're not fully ready to commit to this change, I encourage you don't waste your time. Do not halfway to commit yourself to begin to achieve something only to give up partway through the process. If this goal, we talked about in the first session motivation, if this goal truly is something that's important to you - something that has great meaning - there's no reason not to fully commit and keep going with perseverance until you reach this goal.

 

Staying Stuck

 

So, I ask you, are you ready to change or do you need to stay stuck in this position right where you are today for the next year or five years or ten years in the future? Do you need to stay exactly where you are? Only you can answer that question for yourself, but if you are truly ready to change, today is your best opportunity. There's no time like the present to make this change in your life. So, ask yourself right now, are you ready to make this change? If you are, then all of the previous questions that are asked you through these four episodes in this series of the wellness coaching process, you need to think through those. If you want to stay the same, then embrace that and truly live to the fullest with just what you're experiencing today. There's nothing wrong with that. Embrace it and live it.

 

Conclusion
