What Matters Most - Your Goal
Hey guys. Welcome to the Saluber Coaching Show. Helping you make wellness a priority. My name is Dr. Matthew Blaylock. In today's episode, I'm going to be talking about the thing that is most important to you. The thing that you truly care about the most and that is how do you achieve your goal. Now, I hope you realize that in achieving your goal it's going to be a process. There's going to be certain steps or stages that you need to work through in order to achieve the goals you set for yourself. And, today I want to talk you through the process of achieving your goal or the stages that you're going to have to go through in this change process.
Set a Goal
Now, in order to begin, the first thing that you need to have clear in your mind is, what is your goal? What is it that you're trying to accomplish? What do you want to have or do or be in your life? You need to have a clear goal set. Now, I've already spent four episodes talking about the wellness coaching process. And, in those four episodes, I talked you through a process of how you can begin to set a clear goal that you can begin to work through in establishing or achieving your goals for your life. If you haven't tuned in and watch those videos, I encourage you to do that now. Those will be the first thing that you need to work through in order to clearly set your goal.
Once you know what it is that you want to achieve, the next step is going to be having the appropriate motivation to move you through this process. Now motivation is something that is talked about a lot and it's something that is extremely important. The reason is most people will just not do anything if they don't have a certain level of motivation. Motivation comes in two forms. There's the motivation to move towards something that you want and the motivation to move away from something that you don't want. Something that you don't like in your life you'll move away from that. A lot of people have away from motivation – they don't want to be fat; they don't want to be unhealthy; they don't want to not exercise – but they're not clear about what they truly do want. So, that needs to go back to the first step, what do you truly want? Then, you need to find the motivation for both what you don't want –what you want to get away from. What is it that's pushing you from behind that you're trying to move away from? And, what is it that's pulling you forward that you really want? Both of those need to be strong sources of motivation to push and pull you along during this process.
Make a Decision
Now, once you have a clear goal and you have strong motivation both away from and towards, then you need to be able to make a clear decision. You need to be able to commit to this goal. Now in order to do that, you need to have some process to think through the pros and the cons, or what it is that this will do for you? How you will benefit from it and what will you lose if you don't do it? How will you not benefit? How will this cost you something in the long run if you don't make this change? Once you've weighed the pros and cons, then you need to make a decision. You need to say; I will do this today. And, when you've made that clear final decision, there is no turning back – no chance to do something else. This is the only path that you have in front of you now.
Create a Plan
Then you're ready for the fourth step which is you need a plan. You need to have something in your mind that will guide you through this process. If you're moving from point A to point B, what is the route? What are the roads that you need to take to get you from A to B? This plan needs to be clear. You create it in your mind first before you begin doing. Nobody starts building a house and gets halfway through and then sits down to write a blueprint. That just doesn't work. You need to have a clear plan before you start taking action so that your actions can be in line with the plans you've made.
But, it's pointless to make a plan if you don't have action. That's the next step. You need to take action. The best plans in the world are useless if you don't do something with them. So, you need to begin to work through it. I talk about, what is the one action that you can do in the next 24 hours that will help move you closer to your goal? That becomes the focus of your actions. What is that one step that you can take today that will move you closer to what it is that you desire in your life?
Use the Feedback
Now, once you take action. Once you do something. You're going to get some feedback. You're going to get some result from your actions. And, there are two possibilities. It can be in line with what you want. What you planned and what you did were in line. You got the result that you were hoping to get from that action or you don't get the result that you were hoping to get from that action. Either one of those realities are simply feedback. There's a saying that says there's no failure there's only feedback. Anything that you get as a result of your action is information for you. There's no negative side to it. If you do not get the results that you're looking for, it just gives you information about one way of how not to go about doing this process. There's no failure. There's only feedback. So, once you get that feedback, if it's in line what you want, keep going. Move forward. Continue on with your actions. If it's not in line what you want, then you need to step back and reflect again. Is there something about the way that you did the action that needs to change? Do you need to do something differently? Is there something about the plan that maybe you missed a step or maybe you weren't thinking clearly through the plan? Do you need to revise your plan? Is it a matter of motivation? Do you need to deal with your motivation? Do you need to address your commitment? What is the thing that needs to change so that your results will be different next time?
Through that entire process, when you walk through those steps – setting a clear goal and developing appropriate motivation; counting the cost; making sure that you know the pros and cons, the benefits and what it will cost you; making a clear decision; then setting a clear plan in your mind so you know the steps that you're going to have to walk through; and then doing the actions that are going to help you move towards your goal; and then taking the feedback, reflecting on it, and see how you can make the process even better. Those are the steps that you're going to have to go through. Those are the big picture stages of the change process.
Some people need support in that process, and that's what the wellness coaching process is here to help you do. It's to help guide you through that process. It is to help facilitate you. If you can work through all of the stages yourself, then that's great. Go about achieving your goal today. But, if you need support or if you even need to be challenged to move through those stages or those steps in this change process, I'm here to help you. Let me know in the comments down below which stage do you find that you need the most help with. Do you need more help with setting your goal? Do you need help with your motivation? Do you need help with making a commitment? Do you need help with setting a clear plan in your mind? Do you need help with committing yourself to take action? Do you need help with the feedback and reflecting on how you can improve this process? Whatever it is that you need help with, I'm here to assist you in this process.
